A Warrant of Fitness (otherwise known as a WoF) is a regular inspection that certifies your vehicle meets certain safety standards. You need a WoF if you wish to legally operate your vehicle on public roads in New Zealand.

What does a WoF inspection cover?
A WoF inspection is a general safety check. Most privately owned vehicles, including cars, motorbikes, utes, vans and small trucks, require a WoF. You’ll need to get a WoF assessment every six months if your car was first registered before 2000, or every 12 months if your vehicle was first registered after 2000.
During your WoF assessment, we’ll go over many aspects of your vehicle, including:
- Tyre condition
- Brakes
- Structural condition (e.g. the presence of rust in certain areas)
- Lights
- Door
- Glazing
- Safety belts
- Airbags
- Speedometer
- Steering and suspension
- Exhaust
- Fuel system
It’s important to remember that a Warrant of Fitness is not a comprehensive pre-purchase inspection. It does not cover certain areas of the vehicle such as the engine, clutch, gearbox, paint work and lubricant levels, among others.
What happens if your vehicle fails its WoF?
If your vehicle doesn’t pass its inspection and your existing WoF has expired, you’re legally not allowed to drive it (unless you’re specifically driving to get it repaired or acquire a new WoF).
If it’s a minor issue, there’s a good chance that our fully qualified automotive technicians will be able to fix it the spot. If more extensive repair work is required, we’ll identify the fault, give you a call to discuss the issue and provide you with a competitively priced quote. All our work and automotive parts are backed with a guarantee, and we’ll always get your approval before we do any work on your vehicle.
After the issue has been resolved, bring your vehicle back to us within 28 days of the first inspection and we’ll reinspect it free of charge.
