Understanding Your Car’s Brake System

Most car’s brake systems use drum brakes, disc brakes, or a combination of the two.

Drum brakes

Drum brakes use friction to slow your vehicle. A set of brake shoes or brake pads press outward against a rotating cylindrical component, which is called a brake drum. The brake drum rotates with the wheel. When you press down on your brake pedal, brake fluid pushes the lining of the brake shoes into contact with the inside of the drum, forcing the drum (and your wheels) to slow down and eventually stop.

Disc brakes

Disc brakes work in a similar way to drum brakes. The main difference is that disc brakes are made up of a stationary caliper and a disc, which rotates with the wheel. When you brake, hydraulic pressure pushes brake fluid through the braking system and the brake hose to the caliper. The pads in caliper pushes on the backing plate of the disc, causing the car to slow

Warning Signs That You Need Brake Repairs

The brakes in your car degrade slowly over time due to everyday wear and tear, which can make it tricky to identify changes in your vehicle’s braking performance. We can carry out a comprehensive inspection of your braking system, make repairs if required and replace brake hoses and fluids as needed.

Here are the most common signs that your brakes may be in need of maintenance or repairs:

  • Squealing brakes
  • Vehicle takes longer to stop than usual
  • Brake pedal feels hard, soft or spongy
  • Steering wheel shakes or vibrates when braking
